THE PROVINCE OF MOXICO

Luena is the capital of Moxico, which has an area of 223.023 km2. The main economic activity is agriculture. There are nine municipalities: Moxico, Camanongue, Léua, Cameia, Luacano, Luau, Luchazes, Lumbala Nguimbo and Lumege.

The people of this region practise hunting, fishing and subsistence agriculture. There is also a variety of handicraft, in pottery, fibres and sculpture. There are six ethnic groups in the province: the Tchokwe, Luvale, Umbundo, Bundos, Luchazes and Lunda Dembo.

Coal, Copper, Manganese, Diamonds, Iron, Gold, Wolframite, Tin and Molybdenum, Uranium, Lignite can and be found in the province.

How to get there

By road
From Luanda, through Kwanza Norte, Malanje, Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul, you get to Moxico. However, the roads are in repair.

By air
There are three airports, at Luena, Cazombo and Lumbala Nguimbo. The main airport, at Luena, is currently not in operation. The other two can be used for transport of cargo and smalI passenger aircraft.

 

 
 
 


Natural Attractions

The flora is extremely rich, with a wide variety of trees. Moxico is the second province of Angola for the timber industry, behind Cabinda. Among its species of trees are the mussixi, mumanga, muvuca, mussarnba and mucuwe. Wild bees take advantage of the sap, after germination, which they transform into honey. This also hás medicinal properties. Examples of the fauna of Moxico are the leopard, nusse, wild hare, pacaça, elephant and palanca.

Rivers
There are recreational áreas on the Rivers Lunega Pinto, Luena and Sacassange, which are respectively tem, twenty-one and thirteen kilometres from the city. The Rivers Luena, Lumege Cassai and Zambeze. Lakes Dilolo and Lalundo and the Lagoons at Calundo and Chivumangue. Waterfalls on the Rivers Cassaí e Luízavo.

Forest Reserves
Katupe
: This reserve is flanked to the north by the Rivers Luce and Lue, to the east by the River Condoge, to the south by the River Lodoge and to the west by the Ríver Lue. It has an area of 150 km2.

Lucusse Forest Reserve: This reserve hás na área of 2,450 km2 and a wide variety of vegetation mosaíc of savannahs with bushes and brush. woods and dense, dry forests. To the north, it is flanked by the River Luchibe, to the west, by the River Cuele, to the east by the River Muondoia and to the south by the Ríver Lungue-Bungo.

Kassal Forest reserve: This hás na área of 190 km2. To the north, it is flanked by the River Kassai, to the west, by the River Lue and to the south and east by the Ríver Munhaco.

Macondo Forest Reserve: Área: 750 km2.
